Agricultural Land Use Planning

The Municipality of the County of Inverness and the Municipality of the County of Victoria have both decided to explore options of municipality-wide land use planning with a focus on agriculture. Both Councils have passed motions to begin that process: Inverness Council on Nov 06th, 2017 and Victoria Council on Nov 27th, 2017.

MargareeThe discussions about the subject began with three Open Houses in Mabou, Margaree and Middle River in the months of March and April 2018. The Open Houses were a first opportunity for municipal Council and staff to engage with the public and to determine if there is any interest in the matter. No decisions were taken at these meetings, but they were rather an opportunity to exchange views. The dialogue on agricultural land use planning is only getting started.

The summary of these meetings is now available for download: What we heard report - June 2018.pdf (1.91MB)

The document includes the main messages voiced by the Open House participants, background information on where the process is coming from and an outlook on how the process is expected to continue.

Frequently asked questions:

What is the role and mandate of the Eastern District Planning Commission (EDPC)?

In eastern Nova Scotia six municipalities share their Planning and Development teams for reasons of efficiency. We are planning staff of the Municipality of the County of Inverness as well as the Municipality of the County of Victoria at the same time.

Mabou What type of soil is my property situated on?

Geospatial information on soil categories is publically available on the web site of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. For your convenience we have created a Google Map with Soil Classes 2, 3 and 4 on Cape Breton Island. Class 1 soils, which are most suitable for agriculture, do not exist in Nova Scotia.

I want to stay in the know, can I sign up for updates?

Absolutely. We have created a mailing list that will notify subscribers about major events related to the land use planning process (advertisement of committees, public meetings etc.). E-mail Paul Dec (see Contacts) to be added to the list.
